NASA’s Helicopter On Mars

Flying a helicopter drone on Mars is no easy task! The most important hurdle to clear is the fact that the Martian atmosphere is very, very, very thin compared to Earth’s rich, life-giving atmosphere. Jaakko Karras is a robotics electrical engineer with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and he joined me for this episode of WeatherJazz┬« to talk about all the special nuances NASA needed to address in order to make a helicopter flight on Mars possible.

The image below is an actual image of Ingenuity on the surface of Mars as captured by Perseverance’s camera.

This is an artist’s rendering of what Ingenuity will look like in-flight.
